Thanks Jack,
I like to think of relationships as having to do with sharing. If you share nothing with someone, you have NO relationship with them. Now, in a sense, we all share, for example, the planet, so we share earth-dwelling-ness... :) The more 'things' (time, food, location, posessions) that are shared, the deeper and fuller the relationship is... (See the description of the early Christian community toward the end of Acts 2)
But; in a very important and real sense, you can't share everyTHING with everyONE.
Time is a good example: 24hrs/day, 7days/week only allows us enough time for a certain number of family/friend/work other types of relationships (though some people try hopelessly to manage hundreds of 'acquaintences'). Another way to put it is: you can only have so many 'really good friends'. At one point in my life, I realised I had hundreds of 'acquaintences', and several people who I could be deep, close and honest with, but wasn't making the time to actually be that with them...
OK, I'm rambling now...
Cheers,

Online identity - I wonder whether this is just another variation of our identity - just like we adopt different selves depending on who we are relating to and which 'masks' need to be applied.
You are right though that there is a risk that relating on the net can take time away from 'in person' relating - but hey, it'd cost my week's wages to join you for a feed, let alone thinking about the carbon footprint...
Is it true to say that 'in person' relationships are better? I reckon we need the intimacy of some close relationships but outside of that, I reckon I have better conversations on the net than with, for example, some of my workmates.

Problem is, I just can't be who I want to be in real life. Takes too much effort.

[administrator's note: What's with the fake musician comments? Likely to be the same person... and obviously the email doesn't have to be valid to comment... Hmmm... oh well, if the comments amuse me and aren't intrusive or too frequent, I'll leave them... but I reserve the right to delete them if I feel like it...]
